Based on quantile regressions, our results show that family identity and involvement in capital and management positively influence CSR performance, particularly for low-CSR firms. These findings support the socio-emotional perspective of family firms. However, families with excess control engage less in CSR activities for expropriation purposes. Additional analysis shows that board size and gender diversity attenuate the negative effect of excess family control on CSR performance and help then mitigating the expropriation risk by family-controlled firms.},

abstract = {Social robots are artificial agents communicating in a human-like way. These assistive technologies are surging particularly to address personal healthcare shortages while allowing aging people to stay in their homes. Social robots belong to a rapidly changing AI industry. Such innovation may adopt different diffusion and adoption processes due to the categorical ambiguity of these products; their features vary from those typical of an object (i.e., delivering food) to those typical of a human being (i.e., speaking with and answering to patients). Social robots combine product, service, and software elements, making them hybrid products categorized into alternative categories, fluctuating users' attitudes towards these products. The paper draws on prior research on social robots, categorization, and innovation adoption and diffusion. The aim is to explore healthcare professionals' perception of social robots' adoption and diffusion, allowing us to understand how they view and handle their categorical ambiguity feature. Using the Delphi technique targeting experts with extensive knowledge of social robots and e-health practice, the results emphasize that even if the ambiguous nature of social robots may represent a barrier to their adoption, their categorical ambiguity is an opportunity to create interactive experiences that ultimately increase their acceptance and diffusion.},

In completing their daily tasks, employees receive a plethora of emails, text messages on their smartphones, and app notifications from both professional and personal counterparts. These parallel communications pose new managerial opportunities and workplace challenges.
While such microbreaks foster communicative potential and information access, past research has discussed the issue of technology overload. The present article contributes to parallel communications regarding digital transformation in the workplace.
Based on an original dataset of 369 employees, we examine the issue of technology distraction and interruption in the workplace. The results show that parallel communications positively influence job performance and negatively affect self-regulation and work engagement. The findings enrich the literature on digital transformation. They have practical implications for managers and firms implementing specific arrangements to nurture and embrace successful digital ecosystems.},

Our empirical analyses show that, on average, trading volumes fall significantly (between 4% and 10%) when maximum daily temperatures exceed 30 °C (86 °F). The observed negative association is remarkably robust to a battery of alternative analyses such as bin tests, event studies, and time-series regressions controlling for any seasonal effects and financial market conditions. From a theoretical perspective, this study contributes to the literature on behavioral finance by demonstrating the existence of a ?hot weather? effect on financial markets. Based on a sample of 5222 U.S. firm-year observations, we find that such CEOs positively influence environmental performance and that this effect is more prevalent in profitable firms. This result suggests that powerful CEOs are influential in creating sufficient resources to enhance their firms' environmental performance. They are also typically well established and enjoy the quiet life that predisposes them to prioritize environmental projects. Our results also show that, although firms in polluted industries have lower environmental performance, they are able to mitigate this negative effect when they have powerful CEOs or are more profitable. Our results are robust to a variety of econometric models, alternative measures of environmental performance, and controlling for endogeneity issues},

abstract = {Purpose
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) on earnings quality in a continental European context (i.e. France) more than a decade after their mandatory adoption. Furthermore, the authors investigate whether the IFRS effect depends on firm-specific incentives.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors construct an aggregated measure that considers the main qualitative information characteristics: reliability and relevance. They identify accruals quality, earnings smoothing and the degree of conditional conservatism as attributes of reliability and use earnings persistence, predictability, value relevance and timeliness to measure earnings relevance. To test the hypotheses, the authors use a sample of French listed companies. The analyses are based on ordinary least squares (OLS) fixed effects, the Newey-West estimator and the difference-in-difference approach. The authors also use cluster analysis to identify firms with high incentives for earnings quality.
Findings
The results reveal a decrease in earnings quality that persisted for a decade after IFRS adoption. This decrease is mainly due to a decline in earnings relevance, suggesting that the fair value principle worsened earnings volatility. However, the results show that there is an improvement in earnings reliability after IFRS adoption, suggesting that the international standards were able to constrain managerial opportunism. Additionally, the findings reveal that firm-specific incentives can enhance the positive effect of IFRS, but the incentives are not able to substitute for such effect.
Research limitations/implications
The IFRS effect depends on firm-specific incentives.
Practical implications
The authors prove that firm-specific incentives are important to accentuate the positive effect of IFRS on earnings reliability and to mitigate the impact of IFRS on earnings relevance.
Originality/value
This paper makes several contributions to the literature. First, it addresses the relative lack of attention to the main qualitative characteristics in measuring earnings quality, that is, earnings reliability and earning relevance, and uses an aggregate earnings quality measure. Second, this paper uses a cluster analysis to highlight the role of firm-specific incentives in shaping the effect of IFRS on earnings quality.},

abstract = {This paper explores the value and corporate governance consequences of government awards in a sample of French CEOs appointed to the national order of the Legion of Honor (Légion d'honneur). Short-term market reactions surrounding award announcements are positive, while the valuation of firms with awarded CEOs is larger than that of (matched) firms with non-awarded CEOs. This effect is more pronounced when the CEO is less intensively monitored (i.e., in firms with unitary boards of directors and/or firms without a large blockholder). We also observe that awarded CEOs are more likely to be fired for poor performance than non-awarded CEOs. We do not observe an increase in CEO compensation and distracting activities following the conferral of a government award. Overall, these results suggest that government awards play a governance role. Finally, we explore the channels through which government awards create value and find strong evidence that they provide CEOs and their firms with increased political access.},

However, buildings are complex sociotechnical systems because of the massification, heterogeneity and multiplicity of related data.
Therefore, evaluating their performance and giving relevant recommendation is a challenging task.
In this article, we propose a contributory algorithmic recommendation system applicable to energy performance diagnostic and prediction.
Doing so requires to overcome many theoretical and technical issues related to big data infrastructure, machine learning factory, and DevOps.

The massive amount of data generated by the propensity of tourists to share comments and photos during their trip makes it possible to model their journeys and analyze their behavior.
Predicting the next movement of tourist plays a key role in tourism marketing to understand demand and improve decision support.
In this paper, we propose a method to understand and to learn tourists' movements based on social network data analysis to predict the future movements. The method relies on a machine learning grammatical inference algorithm.
A major contribution in this paper is to adapt the grammatical inference algorithm to the context of big data.
Our method produces a hidden Markov model representing the movements of a group of tourists. The hidden Markov model is flexible and editable with new data.
The capital city of France, Paris is selected to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed methodology.},

However, the current supply of reserves might decrease in the following years. The share of gas- and coal-fuel plants in the power mix is expected to decline in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Hydropower technologies are often put forward as mature and low-carbon technologies able to contribute to cover this increasing need for reserves. Their flexibility and storage capability allow them to support the stable operation of the grid. The procurement of reserves being mostly market-based in Europe, the market design should send the correct price signals to encourage the participation in these markets.},

The wavelet technique is used to predict the accurate occurrence of the subprime crisis. To estimate the parameters of the different copulas, we use the canonical maximum likelihood method (CML). Based on the daily returns of stock market indices of five American countries (Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Canada and the USA) and nine Asian countries (Japan, Hong Kong, India, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, China and Singapore) from 01/01/2003 to 30/12/2011, our results show that the contagion effect exists for all American markets as well as the Indian, Australian, Indonesian, Malaysian, Chinese and Singaporean ones. The findings also show that American markets record high levels of contagion intensity in comparison to their Asian counterparts. This study also confirms the contagious nature of the subprime crisis between USA and both American and Asian countries.},

Using a sample of French listed firms covering 2007-2016, we show that innovative firms are more prone to future stock price crash risk. Managers of these firms have optimistic expectations about growth prospects that encourage them to hide bad news, leading to higher stock price crash risk. This positive relationship is only prevalent in competitive product markets and with low analyst coverage suggesting that innovative firms are likely to experience stock price crashes when information asymmetry is exacerbated. Our results stand up to several robustness tests and remain unchanged after addressing endogeneity concerns.},

abstract = {Assessing the influence of key parameters governing the formation of hydrates and determining the capacity of the latter to store gaseous molecules is needed to improve our understanding of the role of natural gas hydrates in the oceanic methane cycle. Such knowledge will also support the development of new industrial processes and technologies such as those related to thermal energy storage. In this study, high-pressure laboratory methane hydrate formation and dissociation experiments were carried out in a sandy matrix at a temperature around 276.65 K. Methane was continuously injected at constant flowrate to allow hydrate formation over the course of the injection step. The influence of water saturation, methane injection flowrate and particle size on hydrate formation kinetics and methane storage capacity were investigated. Six water saturations (10.8%, 21.6%, 33%, 43.9%, 55% and 66.3%), three gas flowrates (29, 58 and 78 mLn min?1) and three classes of particle size (80-140, 315-450 and 80-450 µm) were tested, and the resulting data were tabulated. Overall, the measured induction time obtained at 53-57% water saturation has an average value of 58 ± 14 min minutes with clear discrepancies that express the stochastic nature of hydrate nucleation, and/or results from the heterogeneity in the porosity and permeability fields of the sandy core due to heterogeneous particles. Besides, the results emphasize a clear link between the gas injection flowrate and the induction time whatever the particle size and water saturation. An increase in the gas flowrate from 29 to 78 mLn min-1 is accompanied by a decrease in the induction time up to 100 min (i.e., 77% decrease). However, such clear behaviour is less conspicuous when varying either the particle size or the water saturation. Likewise, the volume of hydrate-bound methane increases with increasing water saturation. This study showed that water is not totally converted into hydrates and most of the calculated conversion ratios are around 74-84%, with the lowest value of 49.5% conversion at 54% of water saturation and the highest values of 97.8% for the lowest water saturation (10.8%). Comparison with similar experiments in the literature is also carried out herein.},

abstract = {The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between earnings quality and corporate tax avoidance, while accounting for the strength of the legal institutional environment. We find robust evidence that high earnings quality mitigates corporate tax avoidance practices. Furthermore, we find that this association is particularly stronger when country-level legal institutions are powerful. Thus, this study should provide useful insights to academics, professionals as well as policy makers by emphasizing the vital role that accounting information quality could play in the fight against tax avoidance and the important support that legal institutions could provide in this regard.},

abstract = {This study uses fixed-effect regressions estimated with heteroskedasticity-consistent standard errors to investigate the effect of international diversification on corporate cash holding behavior of French-listed firms during economic downturns. The findings show that internationally diversified firms are less inclined to save cash out of their cash flows than their undiversified counterparts. However, during economic downturns, the relationship shifts and shows that international diversification is positively associated with the propensity of firms to save cash out of their cash flows. The negative relationship between international diversification and the propensity of firms to save cash out of their cash flows suggests that risk-reducing effects coupled with easy access to external finance prevail over the high agency costs and information asymmetry associated with international companies. However, during economic slumps, this relationship becomes positive, highlighting a significant influence of the financial crisis on internationally diversified firms relative to their stand-alone counterparts. Thus, this study should provide useful insights for academics, practitioners as well as financial regulators.},

abstract = {We investigate the effect of board (audit committee) gender diversity on audit fees in the French context. We also examine whether the relationship between the proportion of female directors and audit fees is moderated by the enactment of the gender quota law in 2011. We use the system GMM estimation approach on a matched sample of French firms listed in the SBF 120 index between 2002 and 2017. Consistent with the supply-side perspective, we contend that female independent directors and female audit committee members, by improving board monitoring effectiveness, affect the auditor's assessment of audit risk, resulting in lower audit fees. Our findings also document that, by breaking the glass ceiling, the effectiveness of the gender quota law lies not in increasing the proportion of female insider directors, but in boosting the appointment of female independent directors and female audit committee members. Using the difference-in-difference approach, our results reveal that female independent directors and female audit committee members are more willing to assert their monitoring skills after the quota law, leading to lower audit fees. Moving beyond tokenism, we show that, after the quota law, the negative impact on non-audit fees is strengthened only for female independent directors.},

abstract = {The goal of this paper is to investigate forecast heterogeneity and time variability in the formation of expectations using disaggregated monthly survey data on macroeconomic indicators provided by Bloomberg from June 1998 to August 2017. We show that our panel of forecasters are not rational and are moderately heterogeneous and thus confirm that previously well-established results on asset prices hold for macroeconomic indicators. The estimation of our flexible hybrid forecast model - defined at any time as a combination of the extrapolative, regressive, adaptive and interactive heuristics - using the Bai and Perron (1998) methodology reveals a significant timedependence in the structural model with some inertia in extrapolative and adaptive profiles. Changes in the formation of expectations are triggered mostly by financial shocks, and uncertainty is dealt with by using complex processes in which the fundamentalist component overweighs chartist activity. Forecasters whose models combine different relevant rules and display high temporal flexibility provide the most accurate forecasts. Authorities can then stabilize the domestic markets by encouraging fundamentalists' forecasts through increased transparency policy.},
