The research of the Axis “New Materials, Intelligent Systems, and Innovative Companies” is mainly centred around four major intra-disciplinary areas:
The search for functional smart materials represents a major challenge in various fields such as automotive, aerospace, and biomedicine. In this context, our researchers collaborate to harness their expertise in designing bio-inspired architected metamaterials and smart materials, from the digital design phase to the optimization of structural and/or functional properties, encompassing manufacturing and experimental characterization. The technologies developed encompass skills in multiple domains, including multi-scale numerical modeling and simulation, finite element method, artificial intelligence, additive manufacturing, smart manufacturing, and experimental methods.
As part of the digital transformation of society, digital security plays a crucial role. Within the Axis, this theme encompasses cybersecurity, network security, resilience, and cryptography, holding significant importance with both national and international visibility. The second theme focuses on intelligent systems, which are essential components of digital transformation. Research within the Axis in this domain centres on human-machine interactions, whether from a visual, audio, and/or tactile perspective, as well as on robotics, connected devices, IoT, virtual reality, and e-health, all linked to recent advances in artificial intelligence.
How to organize for innovation and how do innovations impact our social, behavioral, and organizational lives are crucial for both theory and practice. Our members excel on an international scale in understanding and exploring the development of new products and processes, as well as in other areas such as managing technological innovation, nurturing talent, supply chain optimisation, advanced warehouse and operations management, brand promotion, and the impact they bring to individuals, groups and countries through these innovations. We have also established expertise in funding, staffing, and developing innovative ventures (entrepreneurship and new venture creation).
We are very interested in researching strategies that enable, promote and manage innovations in this digitalized and hyper-connected world. In Dell'Amico et al. (1995), the authors defined it as the Profitable Tour Problem (PTP). We present an (1 + ?log( n )?)-approximation algorithm for the asymmetric PTP with n is the vertex number. The algorithm that is based on Frieze et al.'s heuristic for the asymmetric travelling salesman problem as well as a method to round fractional solutions of a linear programming relaxation to integers (feasible solution for the original problem), represents a directed version of the Bienstock et al.'s (1993) algorithm for the symmetric PTP.},

abstract = {Technology and finance have emerged as critical factors in the transition to a low-carbon economy, and thereby in international climate change negotiations. A potential source of such resources, that is already having an impact in countries around the world through foreign direct investment (FDI), is transnational corporations (TNCs). The scale and scope of this phenomenon remains under research, including sector-specific drivers pushing firms to invest abroad and the determinants leading to investments in specific host economies. This paper seeks to shed light on these issues through an analysis of FDI in renewable electricity generation and the manufacture of related equipment. FDI in these areas has grown tremendously over the period 2003-2010. Using a framework developed in the World Investment Report 2010, the contribution of various drivers and determinants are discussed as they relate to the observed trends in FDI. The findings suggest that those governments seeking to target FDI as a source of external climate change finance must be mindful in particular of the motivations of the investors they are targeting, as well as the state of their domestic energy policies.},

abstract = {The constrained-layer damping treatment is widely used to control the resonant response of vibrating structures,
particularly in the automotive and aerospace industries. This technique requires design tools in order to select the
best location, type and thickness of the damping and constraining-layer materials for optimum damping while
minimizing the total weight of the damping treatments. In this study, a numerical tool is presented to analyze the
vibration response of plates partially or fully covered with a constrained viscoelastic damping material. This tool
is based on a finite element approach. The undamped plate structure is modeled using a discrete Kirchhoff theory
(DKT) element. However, a sandwich plate element is specially derived to model the damped plate structure.
This element is formulated in such a way that it is compatible with the DKT element. The natural frequencies
and modal loss factors are derived from the modal strain energy method. The proposed approach is validated
by comparing predictions with the results of various examples published in the literature. Hence, this approach
is shown to predict accurately the damping characteristics of arbitrarily shaped sandwich plates, with different
material properties and boundary conditions, fully or partially covered with constrained viscoelastic layers. The
influence of the damping patch locations and the viscoelastic material's shear modulus on the vibration and
damping characteristics is investigated. To damp the plate effectively using partial coverage, the damping patches
must be distributed appropriately. To select the best damping patch locations, an indicator based on the energy
dissipated through the viscoelastic layer is proposed.},

If these remain unanswered, the Foucauldian approach could be relegated to aself-contradictory, ultra-relativist and partial reading grid of ?reality'. In this article, we develop aNietzschean reading of Foucault's thinking that offers answers to these criticisms, and reinstatesit as an independent philosophical project grounded in epistemological assumptions that arecoherent with its ontology and methodology. Finally, we suggest that, following Nietzsche, thewhole Foucauldian project can be approached as a genealogy of morals. Toutefois, la majorité des recherches qui analysent la phase de post-adoption des systèmes d'information se sont concentrées sur les technologies intra-organisationnelles. Cet article se propose de comprendre l'évolution des interprétations d'un Système d'Information Inter-Organisationnel (SIIO) en phase de post-adoption ainsi que leurs effets sur l'usage du système et la négociation du pouvoir entre les différents acteurs impliqués. Pour ce faire, nous avons adopté une approche qualitative basée sur une étude de cas contrastant les représentations de trois groupes de parties prenantes (initiateurs de la technologie, acheteurs et fournisseurs) constituant la communauté inter-organisationnelle dans le cadre des Enchères Electroniques Inversées (EEI). L'analyse de nos résultats met en évidence le rôle des jeux de pouvoir et de contournement (opportunisme boomerang, boycott et lobbying) liés aux enjeux économiques des acteurs. Les stratégies de contournement collectives ont permis de remettre en cause l'usage du SIIO et sont à l'origine d'un changement des rapports de force. La mise en évidence de l'efficacité de ces stratégies montre comment des acteurs en situation de faiblesse peuvent construire des stratégies collectives de résistance. Nous montrons également les limites de l'intervention en postadoption et l'influence de la rumeur et de la presse qui ont permis de légitimer la contestation des fournisseurs.},

abstract = {B2B online reverse auctions technology
(ORAs) emerged as a popular tool for large buying firms
in the late 1990s. However, its growing use has been
accompanied by a corresponding increase in unethical
behaviors to a point that it has been described as the
technology that has triggered more ethical concerns in
the e-commerce arena than in any other segment of
activity. Our findings first indicate that the establishment
of formal ethical criteria based on the restrictive interpretation of ethics as honesty is not enough to resolve
the ethical issues that surround the introduction of a
technology because it ignores the ethical values shared
by most actors in the sector in terms of fairness. We
show the extent to which lobbying, rumor, technical
problems, and public discourse can impact on the
interpretations of the technology regarding ethics.
Highlighting the importance of incorporating ORAs
into the broader context of relationship management
that integrates ethics as fairness and not only ethics as
honesty serves to illustrate why the future of ORAs
might not be as bright as predicted by a theoretical
interpretation of the technology that is sometimes disconnected from the realities of the field.},

abstract = {Reproducible operation at high performances of sc cavities is required for superconducting linacs, at least in their high energy section in the case of accelerators for proton beams. High beta elliptical cavities are thus of concern, and, to achieve required performances for such cavities, surface preparation including electro-polishing (EP) is recommended. Moreover, for large dimension cavities we consider the EP treatment in vertical configuration (abbreviated as VEP) to be more appropriate. For this reasons, a VEP set-up has been designed at Saclay for the electro-polishing of muticells elliptical cavities. Chosen equipment will make it possible to use a wide range of parameters (voltage, flowrate, temperature, nitrogen inerting) with R&D purpose in mind.
Optimization will be done using modeling with COMSOL software for different cavities. As examples, we present some results for the 704 MHz high-beta SPL cavity and the 1300 MHz ILC cavity and show the influence of cathode shape on both acid flow and electric field
distribution during the process. At last, importance of the size of the cavity will be commented.},

En d'autres termes, l'entreprise lutte constamment contre les facteurs d'homogénéisation sectoriels des compétences à l'origine de l'avantage concurrentiel. Le présent article recense les principaux facteurs explicatifs de l'homogénéisation des compétences et identifie les barrières à leur imitation. Une lecture dynamique du processus d'imitation au sein d'un secteur est proposée dans une première partie. L'analyse se base sur le concept du cycle de vie de la compétence. La deuxième partie insiste sur trois catégories de facteurs explicatifs de l'homogénéisation des compétences : la recherche de l'efficience, le développement d'un consensus cognitif entre concurrents et la maturité du secteur. Cette homogénéisation peut néanmoins être réduite via l'institution de barrières à l'imitation des compétences. During thermal equilibration towards the well-known roughening regime, three scaling regimes observed over three successive ranges of length-scales are evidenced: thermal roughening (late stage) at small scales, transient smoothening at intermediate scales and remnant of the initial conditions at large scales. A generalization of the Family-Vicsek scaling is found for the smoothening regime. This approach allows interpreting a series of AFM images of sapphire surfaces showing the thermal evolution of initially rough step edges.},

The evolution of the surface morphology is followed after isothermal annealing (1173 K) for duration varying from 1 h to 53 h and isochronal annealing at temperatures between 1023 K < T < 1253 K. Statistical analysis of the AFM images gives evidence that an anisotropic Ostwald ripening governs the evolution of the 2D island distribution. The activation energy for mass transport on the terrace is found to be 1.3 ± 0.1 eV.},

loss (TL) through sandwich plates subjected to an acoustic plane wave or a diffuse sound field excitation. The sandwich plate considered is made up of a viscoelastic core sandwiched between two elastic faces. The model presented is based on a finite
element formulation for the sandwich plate coupled to a boundary element method for the acoustic medium. The plate formulation is derived from Kirchhoff's theory for the elastic faces and Mindlin's theory for the core. The strain and kinetic energies
of the sandwich plates are written in terms of the mean and relative in-plane displacements of the faces and the transverse deflection of the plate. The diffuse sound field is modeled as a superposition of uncorrelated plane waves with equal amplitude. The vibroacoustic equations obtained are discretized using a triangular
finite element. The accuracy of the present model is demonstrated by comparing it with analytical and experimental results available in the literature. New results on laminated glass showing the effects of temperature on the TL are presented.},

abstract = {This study investigates the determinants of Chinese outward direct investment (ODI) and the extent to which three special explanations (capital market imperfections, special ownership advantages and institutional factors) need to be nested within the general theory of the multinational firm. We test our hypotheses using official Chinese ODI data collected between 1984 and 2001. We find Chinese ODI to be associated with high levels of political risk in, and cultural proximity to, host countries throughout, and with host market size and geographic proximity (1984-1991) and host natural resources endowments (1992-2001). We find strong support for the argument that aspects of the special theory help to explain the behaviour of Chinese multinational enterprises.},

abstract = {This study contributes to the existing literature by empirically investigating the effect of FDI inflows on the aggregate labour productivity of China's automotive industry. A production function model is developed using a panel data set at sub-sector level. Two statistical models: pooled ordinary least squares model (POLS) and fixed effects model (FES) were used to estimate the influence of foreign direct investment on aggregate labour productivity in the industry. Inward FDI plays a positive role in increasing industrial productivity, implying that the government should continue to encourage inward investment. However the results also suggest that efforts to increase capital intensity and average firm size in the industry will also improve labour productivity.},

abstract = {Prétendre au pilotage des réseaux, c'est a minima prendre le risque de se placer en situation de pilotage en eaux troubles. Ce titre joue les oxymores tant on peut s'interroger sur l'objet fluctuant et insaisis sable de ce pilotage. Sur un plan pratique, la position du manager confronté à la logique du réseau et à la difficulté du pilotage n'est pas des plus confortables. Sur un plan théorique, le pilotage des réseaux peut davantage apparaître comme un objet confus car brouillé par la polysémie du terme. Si tout le monde semble s'accorder sur l'importance cruciale jouée par les réseaux ou le réseau dans la compétitivité des entreprises, il n'est pas toujours très facile de savoir de quel ou de quels réseaux il s'agit. Clarifier la définition du réseau semble donc être une première étape-clé si l'on souhaite montrer l'importance de leur pilotage. Cette clarification en exige une autre, celle du rôle du réseau dans la compétitivité des entreprises. Ceci permet d'apprécier la difficulté du pilotage des réseaux, ses enjeux et donc l'importance des contributions de ce numéro spécial.},

abstract = {Purpose - Modern bureaucracies are under reconstruction, bureaucracy being no longer ?modern?;
they are becoming ?post? bureaucratic. Defining the post-bureaucratic organization as a hybrid form
provides insight into the intrinsic difficulties involved in the refurbishment of large complex
organizations. The purpose of this paper is to examine these difficulties empirically.
Design/methodology/approach - The paper describes the case of an Australian public sector
agency, subject to ?corporatization? - a metamorphosis from a strictly public sector outlook to one
that was imputedly more commercial. It focuses on the transition from personnel management to
strategic HRM in the HR function.
Findings - A series of difficulties affected these changes: difficulties in inventing a new identity;
differences in perception of that identity; organizational philosophy towards strategic HRM;
unsuitability of extent networks; and identity conflicts. Two factors emerge as the core explanation for
the difficulties encountered: the ?stickiness of identity? and the difficulties associated with network
development.
Originality/value - The paper outlines the difficulties experienced in the putative ?refurbishment?
of a large public sector agency as it made its way to ?corporatization?.

abstract = {Predicting the vibro-acoustic behaviour of a structure is usually done by using the well
established finite element (FE) method and boundary element method. This paper presents
a vibro-acoustic prediction case performed on a metal box using less accurate but simplified
methods: sub-structuring for the calculation of the dynamic response of the structure, and a
monopole distribution for the radiated noise calculation. Both are less accurate but faster
methods than previous ones. An experimental validation was performed. It led to the conclusion
that these methods give precise results and are sufficient for the pre-design of structures in
the low frequency domain. However, this conclusion must be moderated by the fact that in
spite of the simplicity of the structure, the FE model had to be adjusted to the experiments
to yield to a result close to the experiments.},

abstract = {Communities of practice have been presented as the panacea of organizational learning. Building up on three case studies in different organizations characterized by different internal contexts, this article pushes the logic one step further by arguing that communities of practice can also be unique collaboration spaces within bureaucracies. Their main property is the ambiguity of their relationship with organizational control mechanisms and structures. Communities play with the rules, they can be adaptable and as such can build resilience within the organization. But this ambiguity, being the foundation of their capacity to introduce cooperation within organizations, is also difficult to maintain. Cultivating communities of practice thus becomes a delicate task for managers who must be able to adopt complex and contradictory behaviours. Five roles that can be fulfilled by management are analysed: stimulation, facilitation, support, control and recognition. Far from the generic recommendations that can be found in the literature to date, the findings indicate that the degree of intervention from management is highly dependent on the internal organizational context. This article thus provides a contingent framework to the cultivation of communities of practice.},

a été présentée dans la période récente
comme l'un des principaux facteurs clés de
succès des entreprises. Pourtant l'analyse
de la littérature, portant sur le capital social
et sur les réseaux sociaux, montre qu'une
tension peut exister entre le développement
du capital social individuel et les bénéfices
que l'organisation peut en tirer. Étudiant le
développement du capital social local des
unités opérationnelles de trois grandes
entreprises internationales, cette recherche
analyse les stratégies de maillage par lesquelles elles parviennent à maîtriser cette
tension et à asseoir leur influence sur leur
environnement local. Ces stratégies reposent sur des agents frontaliers multiples
ainsi que sur la combinaison de liens forts
et de liens plus faibles. Par ailleurs l'autonomie accordée aux acteurs du terrain est
contrebalancée par le recours à la culture
comme mécanisme d'intégration.},

abstract = {We might question the concept of collaboration when so many contradictory messages are produced in the field of management. On the one hand, a strong focus is put on the sharing of resources, inter and intra organisationally?especially the sharing of knowledge as an absolute source of competitiveness and progress. On the other hand, some pessimists describe an apocalyptic and hostile world, where collaboration is more of a utopia than a reality?something desirable but rarely achievable. Externally, time-based competition is derived from globalisation and the shortening of innovation cycles. Industry boundaries are vanishing and companies are caught in the ambiguity and complexity of shifting games of multiple alliances. Internally, if we don't subscribe to a description, à la Crozier, in which individualism is only limited by constraining structure, we must accept the idea that information technology has brought panopticism within easy reach of every manager. Even if total control is not the driver, then the competition between profit centres, combined with the pressure of ?necessary? redundancies, can easily compromise any form of collaboration.},

abstract = {The paper describes a new method for computing fluid-structure coupling with incompatible finite element meshes using cubic B-spline functions (UCBFs).A modal approach is used which has the advantage of computing the individual structure and fluid mode shapes, using independant meshes. In order to compuiter teh fluide-structural coupling forbthe incompatible meshes, it is necessary to interpolate the structure and fluid mode shapes over a common geometric mesh. This mesh is defined by the mesh itself which is also interpolated bu UCBF using a minimum number of geometric control nodes.New structural and fluid meshes are first derived from the geometric mesh by defining two different elemnt multiplicities. An extrapolation algorithm is then developed to deduce the values of fluid and structural functions (displacement and pressure) over the two new meshes. The UCBs are finally used to interpolate mode shapes of fluid and structure from the two previous meshes into a common mesh. Having the two new functions over the same common mesh provides the fluid-structure coupling for incompatible meshes. The method is illusttrated for 2D and 3D coupled problems corresponding to shells of revolution, plates and 3D shells.},
