The research of the Axis “New Materials, Intelligent Systems, and Innovative Companies” is mainly centred around four major intra-disciplinary areas:
The search for functional smart materials represents a major challenge in various fields such as automotive, aerospace, and biomedicine. In this context, our researchers collaborate to harness their expertise in designing bio-inspired architected metamaterials and smart materials, from the digital design phase to the optimization of structural and/or functional properties, encompassing manufacturing and experimental characterization. The technologies developed encompass skills in multiple domains, including multi-scale numerical modeling and simulation, finite element method, artificial intelligence, additive manufacturing, smart manufacturing, and experimental methods.
As part of the digital transformation of society, digital security plays a crucial role. Within the Axis, this theme encompasses cybersecurity, network security, resilience, and cryptography, holding significant importance with both national and international visibility. The second theme focuses on intelligent systems, which are essential components of digital transformation. Research within the Axis in this domain centres on human-machine interactions, whether from a visual, audio, and/or tactile perspective, as well as on robotics, connected devices, IoT, virtual reality, and e-health, all linked to recent advances in artificial intelligence.
How to organize for innovation and how do innovations impact our social, behavioral, and organizational lives are crucial for both theory and practice. Our members excel on an international scale in understanding and exploring the development of new products and processes, as well as in other areas such as managing technological innovation, nurturing talent, supply chain optimisation, advanced warehouse and operations management, brand promotion, and the impact they bring to individuals, groups and countries through these innovations. We have also established expertise in funding, staffing, and developing innovative ventures (entrepreneurship and new venture creation).
We are very interested in researching strategies that enable, promote and manage innovations in this digitalized and hyper-connected world. Our axe members are passionate about studying digital strategy & digital transformation, ethnographies of digital phenomena (e. g. gamification, blockchain, algorithmic management), psychology in a digital context (affect and emotions in the digital space), digital marketing, digital and social interactions (via wearables, robotics, deep-learning, gaming, etc.), as well as both the existing and the evolution of business models of innovative companies.
Among the interdisciplinary projects, we include:

abstract = {Destructive changes and breakthrough innovations are embraced in the development of Internet of Things (IoTs). These network-connected smart devices or machine-learning algorithms transfer information on consumers to the Internet by small sensors and computing processors. Companies thus track consumers' behaviour and offer personalised products and services. However, consumers are still sceptical in using these devices due to privacy risks and a dearth of awareness about the technologies' perceived value. Therefore, to overcome these barriers, the research seeks to measure the relationships among the elements that affect customers' willingness and decisions to use IoTs-based products. On the basis of motivation theories, two categories of motivational factors are individuated: extrinsic factors such as entertainment and social interaction and intrinsic factors such as information acquisition, privacy risk, and technology readiness level. They are analysed using a sample of 782 early-adopter customers in Italy. The aim is to offer an explorative, quantitative study on the IoTs to enhance the existing knowledge and support business in the process of engaging more users and creating new personalised products. In line with this, the study's implications, limits, and recommendations for further research are presented.},

abstract = {Purpose
This paper aims to explore how social media can be used strategically for delivering the promises of open innovation and examines the types of structure that can foster the integration of these new tools with more classic top-down innovation approaches.
Design/methodology/approach
A single case study of, ALPHA (pseudonym), a multinational company that combined an integrated strategy and the creation of a lean structure with the full potential of social media.
Findings
To take on the challenges of energy transition, ALPHA has implemented a low-cost approach allowing it to harness the promises of open innovation. This combined the introduction of a lean structure, two social media platforms and processes that ensured the integration of open innovation activities with existing departments.Research limitations/implications
The research is based on a single case study. Further research should be conducted to establish the generalization of the results.
Practical implications
This paper highlights the key success factors in making such a light approach successful, namely, controlling cost and disruption of open innovation; integration matters; leveraging complementarities with existing social media initiatives; and bottom-up adoption.
Originality/value
The research provides a unique approach that can be practically implemented to leverage social media to deliver the promises of open innovation and offers an original way of integrating social media lead innovation and open innovation strategies with more classic R&D activities.},

The emergence of a new international business school in Togo is analyzed from a business network perspective. The establishment of key interorganizational relations thanks to signs of institutional and individual trust participates in the emergence of a new organization in an environment characterized by strong barriers to entry (national and international accreditations, media rankings, etc.). The application of theories borrowed from business networks and international entrepreneurship in the higher education sector is an original contribution to the research. Our results are focused on the emergence phase of the business network and greatly enrich the works that are more dedicated to the network consolidation phase.},

Our paper investigates how such firms can achieve the balance between economic feasibility and environmental and social sustainability under multiple sustainable constraints in terms of the triple bottom line dimensions. The work also describes the impacts of interrelated multiple sustainable constraints on optimal policy for the supply chain transfer price and profit allotment decisions. The case for the sustainable supply chain with multiple supplies assuming no competitions between suppliers is also addressed. Our findings suggest that government intervention plays a dominant role in governing the supply chain firms' behaviors in the context of environmental and public health sustainability. The profit allotment is determined through the process of negotiation of the transfer price interrelated with the government subsidy sharing between the supply chain firms.},

In this article, after examining the nature of the existing governance and implementation gaps in labour standards in global supply chains, we explore how Viet Labor, an emerging grass-roots organization, has developed practices to help close them. This involves playing brokering roles between different workers and between workers and existing governance mechanisms. We identify an initial typology of six such roles: educating, organizing, supporting, collective action, whistle-blowing and documenting. This marks a significant shift in the way action to improve labour standards along the supply chain is analysed. Our case explores how predominantly top-down approaches can be supplemented by bottom-up ones centred on workers' agency.},

It helps to ensure the consistency between safety analyses and system design and then to avoid late errors and to reduce system development time. To achieve this purpose, we tackled the following axes: 1) formalizing a SysML-based design methodology that will be the support for safety analyses; 2) providing an extension of SysML to enable the integration of specific needs for safety concepts in the system model; and 3) performing an automated exploration of the SysML models to generate necessary information to elaborate safety artifacts such as failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and fault tree analysis (FTA). The proposed methodology named safety integration in systems engineering (SafeSysE) is applied to a real case study from the aeronautics domain: electromechanical actuator (EMA).},

It utilised internalisation theory to explain the internationalisation of Chinese state-owned enterprises. This paper showed that we had failed to ask sufficiently challenging questions about the effects of home country institutions on outward foreign direct investment (OFDI). This Retrospective builds on the extensive subsequent research to show the importance of context in constructing satisfactory theoretical explanations of OFDI. Building on these foundations, we propose research challenges for the next decade on Chinese OFDI that transcend the Chinese context and have wider theoretical applicability. Examining alternative forms of social and economic organisation allows the creation of special theories of foreign direct investment nested within the general theory. Following such a strategy would enable International Business research to make a contribution across the social sciences.},

Mechanisms having closed loops can be used in such areas as they generate contact forces and deployable structures. With the help of a bio-inspired mechanism, a piping inspection robot is presented which mimics the motion of a caterpillar. The robot is composed of three modules: a central module for elongation and two other modules on the front and rear for clamping. A slot-slider mechanism is chosen for the legs of the robot. Using industrial components such as DC motors, servo-controllers, ball screws and fasteners, the entire robotic system was realized in CATIA software and a prototype was made at the Laboratoire des Sciences du Numérique de Nantes (LS2N). In this article, we present the forces induced on the motors under locomotion using a dynamic analysis. Next, it describes the latest developments in vehicular networks, the axes of research concerning the layered architecture of the IoV and an overview of the work being conducted pertaining to multi?hop and reactive routing protocols. The chapter further gives a detailed explanation of the authors' routing protocol for IoV communications. This is made up of three different phases: the estimation of contact duration and load balancing, the use and updating of communication anomaly logs and hop?by?hop routing calculation. The goal of the routing algorithm proposed is to find a solution for one?to?one communications between a mobile source and a fixed or a mobile source, via intermediary vehicles, as part of the application of the IoV on a one?dimensional plane.},

The deployment of this service is focused on the exchange and the share of information between network entities. However, selfish nodes are an obstacle in a totally distributed network. As a solution, a compensation could be provided to the vehicles that are willing to participate in VCC or to become an Internet gateway, while preserving their anonymity. Different credit-based incentive schemes are discussed in this paper. A scenario based on the Blockchain technology which implements a virtual payment service for the VCC members, for the resource consumption and for the gateway service in V2V routing mode, is proposed.},

Meta-data of SysML Block Definition Diagram and Internal Block Diagram that describe system architecture as well as meta-data of SysML State Machine Diagram that represent system behavior (in a limited formalism with respect to AltaRica's Guarded Transitions System) are used to generate AltaRica classes, blocks, events, transitions, etc. Flow port directions and connectors are used to create flow propagation assertions. The object and prototype-oriented paradigm of AltaRica 3.0 with class, composition, inheritance, etc. will be respected since SysML and AltaRica's System Structure Modeling Language share commonalities in structuring constructs. It is obvious that one modeling language cannot be replaced by the other because their goals and domains are different, but the mapping between languages such as SysML and AltaRica allows better understanding and communication between systems engineers and safety experts. Once the preliminary AltaRica 3.0 code is generated with structural and behavioral information, safety experts will complete and validate the code with stochastic models, synchronization, common cause failures and redundancy mechanism to carry out safety assessment based on the expressive power of the language, thanks to its mathematical framework.},

Thus, various complex system models using different modeling languages are provided. This paper presents a verification and validation approach that aims to assure the structural consistency between such models. First, the system representations using SysML, AltaRica and Modelica languages for systems engineering, safety analysis and multi-physics respectively, are transformed into labeled and directed multi-graphs. Then, these graphs will be compared for equivalence by using different graph concepts such as isomorphism, subgraph, number of system inputs and outputs, etc. This method allows to synchronize models into one single representation respecting all specifications inherent to each modeling language. Furthermore, inconsistencies are identified when passing from one model to another and feedbacks will be given to each domain expert for validation. A case study from an aeronautical system is used throughout the paper to illustrate our approach.},

abstract = {Internet of Vehicles (IoV) represents the evolution of Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks into Internet of Things paradigm using cloud computing as support. In IoV, Vehicle-to-Vehicle is the principal communication mode where the vehicles are either data transmitter, relay or receiver. This type of communication is subject to disturbances which deteriorate connectivity and hence the quality of service as it prevents access to cloud services on board vehicle. In this paper, we propose a robust routing protocol for the transmission of data packets satisfying the evolution of the topology and the mobility of the network by adopting a hybrid Software-Defined Networking architecture. This is done by disassociating the control plane that makes decisions about where data is sent from the data plane that forwards data to the selected destination. The control decisions are based on different criteria, namely the contact duration, the free load and the communication errors, which are carried out by each vehicle, in a decentralized mode. However, the error logs are handled within clusters, by an elected cluster head node, in a locally centralized mode. An implementation of this proposed hybrid protocol on a multi-agent platform with a comparative study is presented in this paper.},

Electronic infrastructure in the service sector are reducing each kind of cost and improving multiply buyer-supplier relationships, facilitating negotiations and transactions. However, since the coordination costs are still high, the use of ICTs is limited. This phenomenon thus attracts the interests of scholars and practitioners. Although it still needs to further investigate. Especially, the optimal use of ICTs within SMEs' SCM have not been studied yet. Therefore, by leveraging on four proxies: ICTs specialised human resources, knowledge sharing activities, buyer-supplier relationships, adoption of electronic markets this optimal was analysed via structural equation modelling based on a sample of 1254 SMEs operating in the service sector in Italy.},

abstract = {Purpose - This research paper aims to examine how open innovation (OI) intermediaries facilitate
knowledge collaboration between organizations and online user communities. Drawing on a Community
of Practice (CoP) perspective on knowledge, the study lays out a framework of the knowledge boundary
management mechanisms (and associated practices) that intermediaries deploy in enabling client
organizations to engage in online community-based OI.
Design/methodology/approach - This research is based on an exploratory case study of an OI
intermediary and 18 client organizations that engage with online user communities on the
intermediary's platform. Results incorporate both the intermediary and clients' perspective, based
on analysis of intermediary and client interviews, clients' online community projects and other
archival data.
Findings - Results reveal that OI intermediaries deploy three knowledge boundary management
mechanisms - syntactic, semantic and pragmatic - each underpinned by a set of practices.
Together, these mechanisms enable knowledge transfer, translation and transformation,
respectively, and thus lead to cumulatively richer knowledge collaboration outcomes at the
organization-community boundary. The findings show that the pragmatic mechanism reinforces
both semantic and syntactic mechanisms, and is hence the most critical to achieving effective
knowledge collaboration in community-based OI settings.
Practical implications - The findings suggest that OI intermediaries have to implement all three
boundary management mechanisms to successfully enable knowledge collaboration for
community-based OI. More specifically, intermediaries need to expand their focus beyond the
development of digital platforms, to include nuanced efforts at building organizational commitment
to community engagement.
Originality/value - Drawing on the CoP view, this study integrates the knowledge management
literature into the OI literature to conceptualize the role of OI intermediaries in shaping knowledge
collaboration between organizations and communities. In engaging with the interactive nature of
knowledge exchange in such multi-actor settings, this research extends the firm-centric theorization of
knowledge that currently dominates the existing OI research.

abstract = {This paper investigates the impact of regional and institutional factors on labor productivity in China's Township and Village Enterprise (TVE) sector, one of the pillar industries of the economy. Employing a balanced provincial panel dataset, we find a significant variation in the factors determining regional labor productivity between the three macro-regions. The factors of capital investment intensity, foreign intensity, and export intensity behave differently with a significant regional diversity. Only human capital, the real wage, and firm size are identified as the common determinants across regions. A strong self-reinforcing effect has been found with a high degree of persistence in the behavior of, and hence slow or negligible convergence in labor productivity between regions. We find that the labor efficiency gains have been generated more from internal rather than external economies of scale across regions as well as the country as a whole. We also find that the government privatization reforms have had both a short run and increasingly long-term positive impact on the TVE labor productivity across the regions. This finding may indicate that institutional privatization can be an effective tool in promoting industrialization and labor productive performance in China as well as in other transitional economies.},

abstract = {Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to review the emerging literature on formal women-only business
networks and outline propositions to develop this under-theorised area of knowledge and stimulate
future research.
Design/methodology/approach - The authors review the existing literature on formal internal and
external women-only networks and use the broader social capital and network literature to frame their
arguments and develop propositions.
Findings - Propositions are developed regarding how both internal and external formal women-only
business networks can be of value for members, firms/organisations and the wider social group of
women in business.
Research limitations/implications - The authors focus on the distinction between external and internal
formal women-only networks while also acknowledging the broader diversity that can characterise such
networks. Their review provides the reader with an insight into the state of the art and a set of propositions
that present opportunities for future research.
Practical implications - The paper provides insights into how women in business, organisations and
wider society can leverage value from both internal and external formal women-only business networks.
Social implications - The paper contributes to research showing that the social structure of interactions
and context can impact women's standing in the workplace.
Originality/value - The paper sheds light on the under-studied and under-theorised phenomenon of formal
women-only business networks. Beyond the individual member level, the authors suggest that such networks
can be of value for organisations and the wider social group of women in management and leadership positions.

This paper aims to analyze how business units can use their employees' external social capital to explore and exploit the resources available in their environment. Based on multiple interviews with the employees of the global commodity firm Gamma Chemical (around 50,000 employees), the research aims at gaining an understanding of the contextual conditions required to successfully build and leverage individuals' external social client network ties for business unit ambidexterity.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors conducted a single-case study at Gamma Chemical that entailed 33 semi-directive interviews, each of which lasted 1-4 h, at different organizational levels (ranging from top-level management to production workers). We had access to three regional business units. The interviews addressed the links between the individuals in the business units and external actors. The authors also collected information about the company's strategic objectives, the local competitive environment and work organization. Open-ended questions were used to allow the interviewees to freely relate anecdotes about their own network development. In particular, the authors asked the respondents to identify business contacts with whom they interacted privately and to describe the relationships.
Findings
The research findings are two-fold. First, and contrary to prior studies, the authors find that individuals' social capital contributes to both exploration and exploitation at the business unit level. Second, developing and leveraging individuals' external social capital requires a specific organizational context at the business unit level that allows employees to develop and nurture their personal business relationships with clients.
Research limitations/implications
The study is limited by the scope of the sample (a study of one large multinational firm). Further research conducted in similar contexts may therefore be useful for comparability purposes and to generalize the results.
Practical implications
Several practical recommendations describe how managers can effectively make use of their employees' social connections with clients. In particular, the results suggest that managers should seek business unit flexibility on the basis of team-based structures, an autonomous leadership style and by actively creating a degree of critical social network tie redundancy, encouraging a shared network culture. These three specific conditions allow employees' personal client networks to not only flourish but also contribute to business unit ambidexterity.
Originality/value
Prior social capital studies have analyzed intra-firm and inter-firm relationships in terms of contributing to firm ambidexterity. However, these findings have often been difficult to translate into specific organizational levels. Given business units' critical role in identifying and implementing business opportunities for a firm, the authors focus on the micro-foundations of exploratory and exploitative learning by using a social capital perspective to explore the link between employees' private external social relationships with clients and business unit ambidexterity. In this way, we contribute to the social capital literature and research on business unit ambidexterity and to extant contextual ambidexterity research by specifying the conditions that help firms develop and leverage their employees' own external social capital for exploration and exploitation.},

abstract = {This study investigates the mechanism that motivates supply chain firms to reduce environmental externalities while balancing the economic feasibility of the supply chain system under environmentally constrained circumstances in a competitive market. Taking government policy incentives into account, a quantitative model of an integrated supply chain that incorporates sustainable constraints is formulated to optimize supply chain firms' operational strategies of producing environmental friendly products (EFPs). This study contributes to the literature with a better understanding the interplay and interrelation of multiple sustainable constraints and their impact on supply chain firms' collaborative decisions. Our findings suggest that the decisions of operating EFPs are subject to sustainable constraints and that the government policy incentives play a dominant role overseeing supply chain firms' environmental behaviors toward sustainability.},
